Bruce Cottington Award
In 2006, Minnesota Milk awarded the first ever "Friend of Dairy" award to Bruce Cottington. Since then, the name of the award has been changed to the "Bruce Cottington Award" in honor of Bruce Cottington's name and legacy.
This award is given out in select years to individuals that have gone above and beyond the call of duty fostering the goals and ideals of Minnesota Milk through their own personal efforts. Additional criteria for the award also includes their involvement in Minnesota's dairy industry, display of leadership, and community involvement.
2025 Award Winner: Dr. Tony J Seykora
The Minnesota Milk Producers Association recognized Dr. Tony J Seykora for his significant impact on Minnesota’s dairy industry through education, inspiring future generations and research efforts.
Seykora grew up on a dairy and swine farm in Steele County, where he developed a passion for dairy judging as a member of Steele County’s state-winning 4-H dairy judging team. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Minnesota and earned a Ph.D. in dairy cattle genetics from North Carolina State University. He has spent over four decades teaching dairy and animal science courses at the University of Minnesota.
“I’m extremely flattered and appreciative to receive this award,” Seykora said. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my job and teaching tremendously over the years, especially having opportunities to attend and coordinate many dairy events and judging contests. As an educator, I’m most proud of the impact I’ve had on my students, many of whom have gone on to accomplish great things in dairy and agriculture.”
In addition to teaching, he has conducted research in the dairy industry and has published over 100 scientific papers. He has also served as a leader for various youth development programs and workshops, including 4-H and FFA dairy judging.
“Minnesota Milk is honored to recognize Dr. Seykora with this award for his commitment and contributions to the dairy industry,” said Garrett Luthens, president of the association's board. “We appreciate the many years of teaching and mentorship he’s provided to students in agriculture as well as research advancements, which have greatly influenced the dairy community.”
