The Minnesota Milk Producers Association, the state’s dairy advocacy group, today announced its 2024 Producers of the Year: Pat and Jody Lunemann of Twin Eagle Dairy in Clarissa, Minn. This honor recognizes the Lunemanns for their exceptional leadership in agriculture and their community, as well as their outstanding innovation and commitment to Minnesota dairy.

The association will formally present the Lunemanns with the award during its upcoming annual meeting on February 4, 2025, in St. Paul, followed by the annual Dairy Day at the Capitol on February 5. Minnesota Milk members and supporters are welcome to attend.

The Lunemann family has been farming in the same area for three generations since 1925. Originally a 50-cow dairy, the operation expanded over the years to 900 cows. It has implemented various conservation practices along the way, such as utilizing cover crops.

“When I first started farming, one of my initial purchases was a moldboard plow, which is funny to think about now because I don’t own one today,” Pat said. “Our farm has evolved to be much more sustainably oriented through the methods we use, and we emphasize the importance of protecting our natural environment.”

In addition to taking initiative in conservation, the Lunemanns have demonstrated exceptional leadership both within the agricultural community and beyond.

Pat started in agricultural leadership at the young age of 28, serving on the Land O’Lakes board of directors for six years. Following that, he became actively involved with Minnesota Milk, where he served on the board of directors and as board president for many years.

“My experiences in ag leadership have made me a better public speaker and an engaged voice for farmers,” Pat said. “I’ve had many opportunities to visit Washington D.C. and our state capitol through Minnesota Milk to advocate on behalf of dairy farmers, which have been very rewarding.”

Pat has served on the Minnesota Agrigrowth board of directors for twenty years, including his time spent as board chair. This is a broad-spectrum ag advocacy organization involving farmers, farm organizations and ag businesses.

“I often say when we participate in these activities off the farm, we always bring new ideas and knowledge back to the farm when we return,” Jody said. “The people we’ve met and the learning opportunities we’ve had contribute not only to our personal growth but to the growth of our farm as a whole.”

Outside of the agricultural community, Pat and Jody are both long-time participants in local singing groups. Pat has been a member of the Staples Area Men’s Chorus for over 40 years. About 20 years ago, he introduced the idea of hosting a men’s chorus workshop for high school students, “Real Men Sing.” This workshop has continued annually and has been replicated by other organizations, including the Staples Area Women’s Chorus and Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

“Being able to mentor others and share our passion for singing with students is quite an honor,” Pat said. “It’s a skill they can take with them and enjoy throughout life at any age.”

Jody has been actively involved in the Clarissa Community Museum, serving on its board and spearheading efforts to raise donations to enhance the museum for the benefit of the community. She also plays the organ at their local church.
